Wiencek + Associates addressed the need to expand recreational and multiuse space by evaluating several alternative locations for a new cafeteria and finding a way to improve the current indoor & outdoor spaces while setting the stage for a planned future gymnasium. Our solution provided a new wing to enclose a courtyard and reunite the original school with its 1960s addition, which are at different floor levels. The functional split in the program between prep/service area and dining hall is expressed as two shifted masses: one transparent with natural day lighting allowing views for security from the street into the court, and the other more opaque and overlapping the 1960s wing. The project is designed to meet a Silver Certification in the LEED for Schools program. The community will benefit from an improved streetscape and safe outdoor play area for the whole neighborhood.
