Description

Wiencek + Associates Architects + Planners' holistic approach to sustainable design focuses on the issues that benefit the broader missions of our clients. KIPP DC's WILL Academy is an addition to DCPS's Scott Montgomery Elementary School and serves the needs of both KIPP and DCPS students with a gymnasium, cafeteria, and Pre-K classrooms. Created with close collaboration and a design-build project delivery, the multiple uses in this 15,000 SF addition strongly benefit from sustainable strategies and the project is awaiting LEED Silver Certification.

KIPP DC was committed to designing an energy-efficient facility. W+A responded by providing a geothermal heating system on this tight site. In addition, we focused on natural daylight to improve the learning capacity of students by providing ample windows in all rooms, configuring corridors with a visual relationship to the landscape, and adding light tubes through the roof that integrate into the ceiling system and provide daylight to interior spaces. This not only improved the quality and quantity of light in the classrooms, but allows the gymnasium to function with no lights at all - a significant energy savings.
