Description

To the more than 1,700 residents of the surrounding Mayfair Mansions Apartments, their brand new community center is a long-awaited place for education and camaraderie. Wiencek + Associates Architects + Planners designed the 9,500 sf community center addresses the multiple needs of a diverse community - a leasing center, pool house, locker rooms, meeting rooms, offices, classrooms for life skills training, and laundry facilities for the residents. Careful planning and circulation pattern control allowed for these diverse functions to occur simultaneously while maintaining staff control and a sense of safety. Using the client’s preference for bright, engaging colors, volumes were highlighted within the building to interrupt the linear plan and help orient visitors. A single color palette repeats throughout, with emphasis on a two-color accent for each program. This provides identity for each organization while uniting the community center as a whole. Additionally, the center serves as an opportunity to educate affordable housing residents about the benefits of sustainable design by employing strategies in areas that improve resident health and reduce long-term operating costs.
