Wheeler Terrace achieves LEED GOLD!
07.29.2011
Once one of Washington, DC's "crime hot spots," Wheeler Terrace can now claim it is one of the most sustainable affordable housing communities in the Nation. Wheeler Terrace Apartments has received confirmation from the USGBC that we have achieved LEED-NC v2.2 GOLD Certification in addition to the Green Communities Certification that was confirmed last fall. The completed project is 30% more energy efficient than the national code, 30% more water efficient, and one of two national indoor air quality case studies for the National Center for Healthy Housing.
This is a huge victory for affordable housing as it makes Wheeler the first in the region and one of the first Section 8 affordable housing developments in the country to achieve that honor.

Williston Apartments wins 1st Place!
05.10.2011
We were honored to receive the 1st Place Award for a Renovation project for Williston Apartments from the Affordable Housing Conference of Montgomery County yesterday!
After 7 years of problems with funding sources and a fire that destroyed the interior of the structures after the existing tenants had vacated and design had begun, this project was finally completed last summer and is a quiet beacon of light and hope for the community.
Located just two blocks southeast of Howard University, the site consists of two three-and-a-half-story apartment buildings with a total of 35 apartment units constructed in the late 1940s. The addition of pitched roofs cost-effectively brought dignity and poise to the street and the courtyard between the two buildings was reconfigured with new landscaping, and a formal central garden.
Historic St. Dennis Apartments featured in DCMud!
05.09.2011
Wiencek + Associates is once again proud to play a part in preserving the character of our community with the renovation of Historic St. Dennis Apartments in the Mt. Pleasant neighborhood in Washington, DC.
"The big idea is that we’re saving this building that would otherwise have gone to relatively high-end condos and displaced a lot of affordable housing tenants,” Wiencek said. “Through a lot of hard work by the owners and contractor, Hamel Builders, we’re getting to build an amazing new building within the historic shell so that the residents can afford to come back and live there. It gives residents a much broader and more positive outlook and really changes people’s lives,” he said, noting construction should be completed this summer.
